K-LONE – BB-8 // Barbarossa [WYCH002]

You know how the saying goes: “Good things come to those who wait”. Don’t pretend you haven’t been waiting too. The day is finally upon us (well, sort of). After months of speculation and anticipation, K-LONE returns to the ‘Wych’ imprint with two of the most coveted dubplates of the last year.

If you haven’t listened yet, go and listen. Both sides are certified groovers, perfect for any occasion or setting. I’m not even going to bother trying to figure out which side is best, that’s the level of release we’re talking about. I think it was in a Hi5 Ghost b2b Boofy mix where I first came across ‘Barbarossa’ and that was me hooked. If I had to slap a label on it, it would have to be something along the lines of “Future space pirate trap”. Trappy hats merge with ethereal synths and you’re left with a melancholic masterpiece at 140bpm. As a non-musically gifted individual, it’s the melodies that really pull me in. They’ve got a bit of a subtle sea-shanty vibe to them, but at the same time beautifully haunting. Trust me, space pirates are still gonna be bumping this one on intergalactic spaceships in the year 3018.

I’m not going to lie at this point, I’ve been a little nervous about penning a review for ‘BB-8’. Every time I sat down to type one out all I could think of doing was typing out a combination of ‘bleeps’ and ‘bloops’, because they’re so damn catchy. Stylistically very similar to ‘Barbarossa’, ‘BB-8’ is another track that comes straight from the future, maybe a little less piratey though. Either way, I can see this one securing a strong legacy for itself. Whilst K-LONE and his tunes may be utilising some kind of rift in the space-time continuum to create space-age riddims, the rest of us are firmly grounded in 2018 and unfortunately that means pressing plants delays. Personally, I’m happy enough to wait another week for the wax to arrive. For everyone who’s adopted 21st Century technology to listen to their tunes, you are able to go and cop this now, why wait?

WYCH002 is out now and available from Redeye, White Peach, Boomkat and the Wych Store.
