Turner may not be a familiar name to many of you but if you are a GetDarker TV regular, his mix will bring back some memories from a couple weeks back. His debut session from Episode #139 had a lasting impression on the startled audience who were pleasantly surprised by his mixing abilities and his admirable vinyl collection. With a full heart of devotion for the sound, Turner has also had a number of his productions played out by Distance on his new talent show, as well as Dismantle, Concave and Be-1ne. Celebrating his 19th birthday today, I thought it was appropriate time to publish his feature. I caught up with him and this is what he had to say:
So on my 19th birthday, the presents of a dressing gown and slippers are a bit overshadowed by the excitement of having a piece on one of the freshest dubstep blogs about at the moment. Some of you may have caught my GetDarker set a couple weeks back but to those that didn’t – Hi, I’m Turner (my real first name, my dad named me after a Mick Jagger song called “A Memo From Turner”, naturally the 7” is on my wall), I’m from Brighton and here’s a mix that showcases the tunes I play and how I play them.
I mix vinyl and cut dubplates, it’s the way I first learnt to mix and when I tried mixing CD’s it just didn’t feel the same. There’s something about mixing with plates that brings the physical aspect of the music out even more. You can take a plate with you and watch it mash up dances all over, you remember where and how you got it and you see it’s life start and end. A plate’s got soul and there’s no soul in CD. I’ve been mixing and producing for about a year and a half each and have no intention of letting up, I make music to be heard on a system but I add elements to make my music translate across radio waves as well.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy this mix I’ve built and forgive me on the sound quality as I’ve only got a cheap interface at the moment. I wanted to give out a free tune with this mix as people recently have been asking where they can buy my music and but unfortunately nothing is out at the moment.
